William Davis Hawkins - Class Of 1944

HAWKINS, William D. October 20, 1936 May 30, 2018 William Davis "Bill" Hawkins passed away after a long illness on May 30, 2018, in Greenville, NC, age 81. He is survived by his wife Hallie; his daughters Annie and Emily Hawkins, Sarah Hawkins and several grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Hilda McCarter Johnston Deland, FL, Charlie Hawkins Albuquerque, NM and Susan Karesh Charleston, SC. He was predeceased by son Dave Hawkins. Bill was born on October 20, 1936, Atlanta, GA to Louis and Sarah Hawkins. Bill lived for over 30 years in West Palm Beach, FL. A short 5 year adventure living on Whidbey Island, WA created great joy and memories. He served on the Langley City Council and was a leader in getting health care services to the south end of the island. He also lived in both North and South Carolina. He was a graduate of Palm Beach High School in West Palm Beach, FL and Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. Following graduation, Bill entered the insurance business in south Florida, working in the agency founded by his father, and later as president of the agency. Bill was President of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents. He remains a member of North Palm Beach Presbyterian Church. While living in Florida, Bill was active in many lay ministries. He was also active in political and community affairs at local and state levels. Bill will be remembered for his quick wit, his appreciation for art and design and for his love of international travel. One of his favorite places in the world, though, was Rabun County, Georgia. Though he moved from the West Palm Beach area, he remained a loyal Miami Dolphin fan. Arrangements will be made in the near future.
