  Emery Jordan NEWELL Obituary

NEWELL, Emery Jordan Judge Emery Jordan Newell, Lake Park native and longtime North Palm Beach resident, passed away Monday, June 4, after savoring one last bowl of ice cream. Born, January 25, 1928, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Emery was the son of Elma and Edward Newell. He graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1945 and subsequently received undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida. While at the University of Florida, Emery was a member of ROTC and president of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He served in Korea as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army JAG Corps. Emery practiced law with his father and friends until he was appointed as the first judge of the Palm Beach County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in 1961. He served thirty years as a Circuit Court judge before retiring in 1991. During his tenure, Emery was a co-founder of the Nelle SmithResidence for Girls, was named Child Advocate of the Year in 1984, was president of the West Palm Beach Kiwanis Club, served on the North Palm Beach village council, and was an active board member of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. Emery will be remembered for his compassion and insight, as well as his candid opinions. He was also known as a fierce competitor and avid sports fan. He played baseball for Palm Beach High School, he was Mr. Intramurals in college, he was a little league coach and high school football official, and an enthusiastic tennis player and frustrated golfer for most of his life. Emery was finally rewarded for his loyalty to the Chicago Cubs when they won the World Series in 2016. Emery is survived by his wife of almost sixty years, Jane Parmelee Newell; his sister, Kathleen May; his daughters, Susan (Eric) Jaffee, Shelley (Ke'alohi) Newell, and Janie (Jay) Bogan; his grandchildren, David (Alyssa), Dylan, and Laura Jaffee, Brian (Liz) and Ethan Sayre, and Graham and Joe Bogan; a loving extended family; the soon-to-be Cubs fan, great-grandchild, Jaffee; and by Emery's biggest fan, his dog Mojo. An informal celebration of Emery's life is scheduled for Saturday, June 16, 4:00PM to 7:00PM, at the home of Shelley and Ke'alohi, 189 Honeysuckle Drive, Jupiter, Florida 33458. We will be feasting on pies and sharing sweet stories of Emery's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Emery's memory to the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, (hspbc.org/donate).
